Man fishing on his small boat at sunset in the middle of a lake.Located roughly halfway between the cities of Lansing and Flint, Fenton, MI, has a population of about 3,500 and is known for its history as a major railroad hub in the region. Although it is not particularly close to the Great Lakes, Fenton is not far from some excellent fishing spots where locals and visitors can cast their lines and catch some great specimens of the local fish species.

1. Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge

Boasting a surface area of almost 10,000 acres, Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful natural escape where visitors can truly disconnect from the city, check out some beautiful landscapes, and practice a vast array of water sports and activities including boating, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. This wildlife refuge was established in 1953 and boasts several rivers, ponds, small lakes, and other bodies of water that make it a well-known destination among local anglers.

Getting to Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge from downtown Fenton takes about an hour and a half by car, driving north along route M-13. Some of the fish species that can be found in the area include walleye, bluegill, smallmouth bass, yellow perch, channel catfish, bullhead, white sucker, and freshwater drum. Anglers must keep in mind that only boat fishing is allowed in the area, and boaters are forbidden from crossing into marsh or pool units.

2. Holloway Reservoir Regional Park

Located less than 40 miles east of Fenton, Holloway Reservoir Regional Park features excellent fishing points, canoes, boat launches, and several opportunities for recreational activities and outdoor sports. The main attraction of the park is undoubtedly the Holloway Reservoir, which spans a surface area of almost 2,000 acres and is home to thousands of excellent specimens of largemouth bass, crappie, smallmouth bass, bullhead, bluegill, northern pike, catfish, perch, and walleye.

Getting to this regional park from downtown Fenton takes about 45 minutes by car, driving northeast along route I-69. Once you are done fishing, make sure to check out the beautiful Buttercup Beach on the northern shores of the lake, where you can unwind and enjoy the sunset. Although the reservoir was created primarily for water supply purposes in the 1950s, its popularity has grown among visitors from all over the state, and it can get crowded during the weekend.

3. Lake Lansing

Located on the eastern side of the city of Lansing, this lake boasts a surface area of more than 460 acres and is the best-known fishing destination among anglers from the state capital. Getting here from Fenton, MI takes less than an hour by car, driving southwest along route I-69. Some of the species that can be found here include northern pike, bluegill, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, carp, crappie, redear sunfish, and perch.
